Western Sahara, as a former Spanish colony, became part of Morocco in 1975. The “Popular Front for the Liberation of Segiet-el-Hamra and Rio de Oro” or POLISARIO, which has the support of Algeria, advocates for a referendum on self-determination for these territories under the auspices of the UN. They propose their own name – the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
