Taking the Next Step

So, as I mentioned earlier, Ted and I had an appointment with the reproductive endocrinologist last week.  From here on out, we will refer to the reproductive endocrinologist as the Baby Maker Clinic because it’s easier to type and much more fun to say!  Here’s how it went down…

First, we sat around in the super quiet waiting room all by our lonesomes.  Seriously, it was really quiet in there.  I felt like I’d get in trouble for yelling.  Eventually it was our turn to go in and we got our blood pressure taken.  Thrilling.  Then we sat in the office and waited for the nurse praticitioner to come in.  Exciting so far, isn’t it?

So, the nurse comes in, and I get to answer all sorts of fun questions about my period, girly bits, and sex.  Then, Ted got to talk about his penis.  It went a little something like this…

Nurse: Have you had your sperm checked?

Ted: Yeah.

Nurse: And everything was good?

Ted: Yeah.

Nurse: Have you still got all the parts you were born with?

Ted: Yeah.

Nurse: Everything works ok?

Ted: Yeah.

After we shared the innermost workings of our privatemost parts, the nurse talked us through the process.  Lucky Ted doesn’t have to do anything.  I had some tests that day, more next week, and even more when/if I get my period.  Before I get to my feelings on the whole matter, let’s talk a little about the tests I had done…

First up was some bloodwork.  No biggie.  Second was my transvaginal ultrasound.  Yes.  I said transvaginal.  Not sure what I mean?  Picture, if you will, a large dildo with a camera on the end.  Then imagine someone using it to take pictures of your uterus by shoving it on in and twirling it around for about 10 minutes.  Fun times!  Truthfully, there was no shoving.  There was, however, a condom and a lot of lube.  It wasn’t bad, just uncomfortable really…but man was I sore the next day.  Yes, we are still talking about the ultrasound and not the day I lost my viriginity.

After my tests, though, I got some prizes in the form of more prenatal vitamin samples than a girl could ever imagine:

Hey, at least you get prizes after they stick the camera up your hoo-ha.

Overall, despite the fun with vagina cameras (I am going to get so many pervy hits for this post), I came away feeling very positive about the whole experience.  Our nurse said it sounds like I have a possible ovulation problem related to my thyroid condition.  Since my thyroid meds have just changed and my cycle seems to be regulating, there may really be no problem at all anymore.  We just have to wait for the test results to find out.

The best part of the whole experience for me was that I feel a huge sense of relief.  I feel like a giant weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.  The Baby Making Clinic has a clear plan for us.  I can look down the path and see each step ahead.  There will be no more waiting 45-60 days in between talking to my doctor.  No more having sex every other day just in case it might be the day.  Now, the Baby Making Clinic will tell us exactly when to have sex, and the rest of the month we can just do it when we want to!  Overall, I feel like I’m not alone in this process anymore, and that is a great feeling

If you live in the area and are looking for a place to go for fertility testing and treament, we are going here.  So far, I am really happy with our choice.

  1. That would be so great if it ended up being a thyroid regulatory thing! Also, I HATE those ultrasounds. HATE! They had to do that after blowing my bladder up with a catheter to rule out the appendicitis a couple weeks ago. HATE!

Haha–the memories. But anyway, I’m so glad you found someone you can trust with all of this. It’s a huge deal!

  2. Oh, I’m glad it was a good experience! Hooray for the baby making clinic!

  3. Erin, I’m happy to read this. It’s so much easier when you can see things laid out like you say that have planned for you.

  4. Well. That vag-cam sounds waaaaaay too personal! They should make the men go through hell, too!

  5. Ohhh man, that sounds like an interesting experience.
I hope everything continues to go well!!

  6. I’m glad that you feel better and so far, so good. You two deserve it! =)

  7. I am relieved that YOU are relieved, my dear. I can only imagine how stressful this all has been for you & Ted. I’m keeping my fingers & toes crossed for you both. I have a really good feeling about this. :]

  8. Michelle says:

I am so glad for you! You have a plan! Good luck.
And when you get knocked up, you get another vaginal ultrasound…

  9. Jealous! I didn’t get any goody bags during my infertile time. I shouldn’t complain since I eventually got a baby out of the whole ordeal (soon to be two babies) but dude! I want my goody bag!

Do you have to have an HSG??

  10. With all those sex toys, you’d think you’d get pregnant just from a doctor checking to see how to get you pregnant.

  11. Yay! Add my name to the list of folks VERY happy that things are working out for you guys!!! 🙂

  12. So glad to hear your doctor visit went well!!!

  13. Glad the appointment went well although I have to say the whole “experience” doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun! But it’s worth the end result 🙂

  14. I’m glad that the visit was a positive one, you definitely deserve some happy news 🙂

  15. UGH. I’ve had the hoo-ha cam as well. NOT FUN. I feel for ya!

SO glad to know you are feeling good!

  16. I’m glad it was a positive experience! And I’m kind of excited to see the kind of Google hits you get with “vagina cameras”.

  17. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you guys.

  18. I’m really happy that you feel a sense of relief about all of this. I just know that everything is going to come together (hmm, pun intended?)

Also, you are going to have so many pervs visiting your site.

  19. I’m so thankful that you are feeling a sense of relief after having gone to the clinic. I know it wasn’t an easy thing to do, and I think it is awesome that you made it through (with a little soreness) and are moving forward. Sending positive thoughts your way, lady!

Also, this post is going to get you SOO MANY creepers. … Can you do a search terms post soon? 😉

  20. Sounds like quite the experience, but I’m glad it’s been so positive!

  21. So glad it was a positive experience and resulted in a sense of relief rather than more stress. I think about you guys a lot and every time I have time to log in to my google reader I hope that I’ll come over here and find some big and exciting news. (Even without the big exciting news, though, I love coming and getting a laugh out of your adventures with the hoo-ha cam.)

  22. oh i’m sooo relieved for you guys! i’ve been thinking about you since that last post!

  23. The vag-cam is a little weird, isn’t it. That is probably the biggest invasion of space I’ve ever experienced.

I’m so glad you like the office! That is so important.
