12.06.09 Some New Goals

This week, I made a big decision.  I decided to stop my RDI supervision, and I feel fantastic about it.  The truth is, doing it wasn’t making me happy.  Sure, it might have brought me some future happiness, but it was bringing me current stress and pain.  As my dad always says, happiness is a journey, not a destination.  So, I gave myself permission to just go on a journey, and to not worry so much about the destination.  I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.  Sure, there’s still a lot of weight there, but my general mood is considerably improved.  The best part is that I feel really great about this decision.

So, now that I actually have some time for myself again, I’ve decided to take a cue from Ashley and Kyla.  I’m setting some goals for myself for the month of December.  It’s time to find a way to be me again.  It’s time to take care of my spirit for a little while.  So, in December, I will…

Read. I used to be a huge reader, but this year, I’ve barely been able to get through a book.  I’ve been reading the same book for two full cycles now.  So, my goal for December is to finish my current book and read three more.  I’m so excited to get started!

Yoga & Meditation.  I need to spend some time taking care of my body.  I love doing yoga, and thanks to Rachel and Erini, I have a brand new Wii Fit Plus to customize my yoga routines!  It’s my goal to practice yoga three times a week, and to meditate on myself, my health, and my goals daily.

Clean. My house is a mess.  It makes me feel messy and disorganized.  So, I’m pledging to spend 10 minutes a day cleaning something in my house.

That’s it for now.  I figure that I can work on all three of these goals in an hour a day, and an hour a day for me is not too much to ask for.

In baby-making news, today I am really in need of a cup of tea and someone who understands.

Im with you on the reading thing. I keep buying books (I looooooove used book sales) but Im buying them faster than Im reading them. I literally have like 20+ books that I havent read yet.

Also, my apartment is a disaster too. I just texted my boyfriend a few hours ago to inform him that when he gets home from work, we are getting some serious cleaning done.

This is the third time I’ve tried to comment, WordPress keeps eating my posts :-( Anyway, your dad is a very wise man and thanks for sharing that! I have a hard time remembering that happiness isn’t just an end goal and can always use a reminder :-)

I would love to share a cup of tea with you, and you can borrow my ear…

Also, I think your goals sound fabulous. Let me know how you like the wii fit plus!

Best wishes on your journey love, reading + Wii Fit sounds great.

I just recently rekindled my relationship with the local library. Books, Books and Books for Free!! Who’da’thunk’it.

Speaking of gadgets & books – have you seen the Barnes & Noble “Nook”? (nook.com) – love at first sight for me.

Good for you, Erin! :) I hope you will be posting about the books you discover.

Sounds really good. Being happy with your decision is always the most important thing :) And yoga sounds wonderful, I’ve been looking into it too but I am just not calm and patient enough…

I love that you have set yourself achievable goals that will make you happy; that seems so much better than dreaming up unrealistic targets for yourself. Hope you got your cup of tea

I love that: “Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” It’s so true but we keep striving for something that will someday make us happy.

Those are great goals! I put some up on my blog for the first time and it was really fun.

I think your plan sounds great! Congrats on quitting the program. It sounds like that was just the change you needed to make your life easier :)

It’s so cool that you have a Wii fit! I want one badly. I hope your yoga plan goes well. And I hear ya on that cleaning of the house thing. I keeo trying but I never seem to make a dent.

I hope you have that cup of tea and that you feel better!

If you feel fabulous about a decision you have made…you know you’ve made the right move. Maybe at another time in life when you’re not so buried in stress…Stress isn’t going to help with other areas of life at all!

Hope you got that tea!

I’m so glad you made a decision and are feeling good about it! :) And I’m drinking tea now–so I’ll be thinking of you as I finish this cup.

Your goals are exactly the goals I want to be working on.

All to often I just let things clutter up my life. I really just need to take care of myself.

Glad you got to come out last night with us! It was awesome seeing you again! :)

I’m so glad that you are going to get some more time to do what you need and destress some :)

I need to make some improvements in my life this month as well. The first thing I changed was my exercise schedule. The change was the start exercising because I wasn’t at all. I already feel better about myself. Good luck with your goals this month!

Good for you Erin for realizing what you needed to do to make yourself happy. I know its not an easy decision to leave something behind, but if you’re already feeling better, then it was the right decision. If I lived closer I would totally bring you tea and cookies.

Awesome! You already sound calmer! I love the Wii Fit (although I haven’t done it as much as I did this summer…). Have you ever heard of FlyLady.net? I found her this summer. I shined my sink and then we try and do 15 minutes a day but it doesn’t always happen. You can sign up for her e-newsletter and she’ll send you something to do every day and every week she focuses on a different zone in your house. Again, I was way better at keeping up with her over the summer…

Can you believe I’ve never used the Wii? Like, that’s ridiculous, right? I’m so horrible at being part of Gen Y.

These are great goals. I have the same ones, especially the cleaning. We should be buddies and do this together!

Congrats on giving up the RDI!!! You really can only do so many things at once and it sounds like you are already WELL occupied. Hope your weekend was restful =)

I discovered you via Kayla Aimee (Twitter). Just wanted to stop in and say that I am happy for you and for your goals. It’s a new chapter for sure – one that I’m sure you are eager to embrace. I wish you the best. :)

I’m so happy to hear that, and good for your dad for being so wise. Sorry for the geek moment here but it totally reminds me of one of the last scenes in Star Trek: Voyager –

Harry Kim: When I think about everything we’ve been through together, maybe it’s not the destination that matters, maybe it’s the journey, and if that journey takes a little longer, so we can do something we all believe in, I can’t think of any place I’d rather be or any people I’d rather be with.
Tom Paris: To the journey.
All: To the journey.

And I’m totally with you on the reading thing! I see people blogging about books they’ve finished with lists of all the books they’ve read in 2009 that are like 50 books long and I just feel awful – I used to be a big reader too! That’ll be one of my new year’s resolutions :)

I hope you find a nice cup of tea. Let me know if you don’t, and I’ll mail you some of the best stuff ever. :)

I know I can’t exactly relate but I’m definitely here for a cup of tea, even if via gchat or a phone call.

What book are you reading and what’s up next? (though I suppose I could check out Goodreads!)

Congrats on making a decision that is right for you. Your dad is right: happiness is a journey. Great way to look at it!

I used to be a huge reader, too. Not sure what happened. Full-time job + school, I guess? I miss it, though.

I’ve with you on the yoga and meditation. I’d like to start that in my own life. Soon.

hi there. just found your blog… and i can really relate. i just had my 4th IUI, and i’m midway through the 2 week wait….
i thought i’d mention– have you read Peggy Orenstein’s book Waiting for Daisy? it’s a great book about her struggles with infertility, relationship, career, etc. from a feminist perspective.

[...] in December, I said that it was my goal to finish one book and read three more by the end of the month.  [...]
